WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN A HIGH-QUALITY MEMORY FOAM MATTRESS?

What to look for in a high quality memory foam mattress

A good night’s sleep seems harder to come by these days. While a memory foam mattress can help solve your sleeping problems, buying a low-quality mattress that temporarily meets your needs may hurt you in the long run. A memory foam mattress is an investment in your sleep and health, that’s why we at Luxi Sleep have created this guide to help you identify what to look for in a high-quality memory foam mattress. This way you can extract all the benefits out of your new mattress and enjoy a good night’s rest.

Understand your sleep habits

The first thing to consider before you purchase your new memory foam mattress is your personal sleeping habits. Everyone has different sleep preferences, understanding how you sleep will determine the type of mattress you end up buying. Here are some questions to ask yourself before you start shopping:

  • Do you sleep on your back or side?
  • Do you get hot when you fall asleep?
  • Do you share the bed with someone else?

Now that you have a better idea of what kind of sleeper you are, you need to understand the two essential elements of a good quality mattress: density and thickness.

Density

Your memory foam mattresses’ density is a direct indicator of quality. Density affects the lifespan of the mattress as well as the support you get while you sleep. However, low density does not necessarily mean low quality, it’s more of a sleep preference. Here is a quick outline of each density type:

Low Density: Tends to be softer allowing the sleeper to sink-in more, this is what forms that “sleeping on a cloud” feeling. Low density mattresses are generally more sought out by side-sleepers while back and stomach sleeps look for higher density.

Medium Density: This is the most popular option as it is a good blend of firm and soft.

High Density: This is generally for those with serious aches, pains or medical conditions the higher density offers more support. Additionally, higher density memory foam equals less motion transfer across the bed which is something to consider if you share the bed with someone.

Thickness

The thickness of your memory foam mattress is another factor to consider when determining mattress quality. If you pick a mattress that is not thick enough it can lead to a shorter life span, as the constant-use will rub the foam together and cause it to thin out. Memory foam mattresses contain several layers of density quality throughout, generally starting with a thicker density at the bottom layer and gradually getting lower closer to the top. We recommend mattresses with at least 10-12 inches of thickness as this will give you the proper comfort and support levels.

Other Benefits to Consider

In addition to density and thickness, here are some other mattress qualities to consider when looking for your memory foam mattress:

  • Temperature-Sensitivity: Good memory foam reacts to your body’s heat and will soften to your body’s hot spots, i.e. your pressure points. The sleeping foam should react but not overheat you. If you tend to get hot while you sleep, look for memory foam that offers breathability and temperature adjustment.
  • Hypo-Allergenic: If you have asthma or suffer from allergies in the middle of the night, consider a mattress that contains hypo-allergenic material. The materials will help reduce the allergens and dust mites that can get trapped in an ordinary mattress.
